Sven Klomp studied electrical engineering with a focus on communications at Leibniz Universität Hannover and Brunel University Uxbridge. He received a distinction for his Dipl.-Ing. degree in 2004.

He has been working towards the PhD degree at the Institut für Informationsverarbeitung of Leibniz Universität Hannover until end of 2011.
During this time he was an active contributor to the ISO/IEC Motion Experts Group (MPEG) and the ISO/IEC / ITU-T Joint Collaborative Team on Video Coding (JCT-VC).
He was involved in the DISCOVER project where the major research topic was interpolation of the side information. This
mainly implies motion estimation and compensation.
With these experience, he worked in the field of decoder-side motion estimation (DSME).
