Thomas Wedi received the Dipl.-Ing. degree in electrical engineering in 1999 and the Dr.-Ing. degree in 2004, both from the University of Hannover. From 1999 till 2003 he worked as a research scientist and teaching assistant at the "Institut fuer Theoretische Nachrichtentechnik, und Informationsverarbeitung" of University of Hannover with research focused on motion and aliasing compensated prediction for video coding. In 2001 he became the "Ober-Ingenieur" at this institute. Since December 2003, he is project leader at the Panasonic R&D Center Germany where he is responsible for the video coding standardization activities and the development of next generation video coding schemes.

Dr. Thomas Wedi is an active contributor to the ITU-T Video Coding Experts Group (VCEG) and the ISO/IEC / ITU-T Joint Video Team (JVT), where the H.264 / MPEG-4 AVC video coding standard has been developed. In both standardization groups he chaired ad-hoc groups that are related to coding efficiency improvements. From 2003 till 2004 he also chaired an ad-hoc group on a related topic within the Blu-ray disc foundation. In cooperation with Robert Bosch GmbH and Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. he holds several international patents in the area of video compression.
